After months of waiting, Keyshia Cole and Ashanti finally had their Verzuz battle and fans were underwhelmed, to say the least. The virtual event, which was sponsored by Doritos and Ciroc, was originally scheduled for December 12, but was canceled after Ashanti tested positive for COVID-19. The show was then rescheduled for January 9, but was once again canceled due to the storming of the State Capitol. Just when we were ready to say “forget it,” the two women graced us with a battle that fizzled faster than their recent attempts at an album. me excited weeks ago for the ashanti & keyshia cole verzuz: me now: pic.twitter.com/D9xXzkzMhI — xym🌹ne (@symonexcx) January 22, 2021 What could have been a great event, quickly turned into fans watching an awkward back and forth by two women with drastically different personalities. For starters, Keyshia was an hour late and had an attitude for reasons unknown. Ashanti, on the other hand, brought her upbeat positive personality, but that was overshadowed by her constantly checking her phone and brushing her hair. Keyshia Cole and Ashanti kept pushing this versus back and have the audacity to be almost an hour late and I’m tired #Verzuz pic.twitter.com/GrrlyULJ8K — Ayanna 💕 (@yanna_jeniece) January 22, 2021 The ‘Shanti & Keyshia Verzuz’ is the fourth matchup by female artists, following Erykah Badu & Jill Scott, Gladys Knight & Patti LaBelle and the most recent, Monica & Brandy. Currently, Jeezy & Gucci Mane hold the record for the largest Verzuz audience, with a total of 1.8 million viewers. Welp, there you have it. NEXT! We shouldn’t be waiting this long for something that’s been canceled twice. They have the whole day to prepare — 😍NaturalQueen👑 (@BelieveMe_Iwill) January 22, 2021

Let’s get ready to step back in time to 2002, where Juicy Couture tracksuits and swoop bangs were all you needed to live your best life! The now-viral quarantine virtual streaming show, Verzuz, has announced another epic battle, this time pairing R&B songstresses Keyshia Cole and Ashanti. After news of the battle was announced on social media, it quickly became a trending topic. the paperwork is in !!!!!! @THEREALSWIZZZ What a night this going to be !!!! @ashanti vs @KeyshiaCole who you got ? @verzuzonline 👀👀👀 dec 12 8pm ET drinks by @Ciroc @applemusic pic.twitter.com/HdPUNee8uy — Timbaland (@Timbaland) December 5, 2020 Both singers are known for their slow ballads and upbeat women’s anthems like Keyshia’s 2004 “I should have cheated” and Ashanti’s 2002 classic break-up song, “Foolish.” The question remains if the two ladies will be able to compete with the previous numbers that were garnered by legends Patty Labelle and Gladys Knight, or superstars Brandy and Monica.   But it will be fun to see what songs these divas pull out of their repertoires.

Music superstars Brandy and Monica are among the latest duo to join the Verzuz webcast series. The new battle series was created by legendary record producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz during the COVID quarantine as a deejay battle and quickly established a following amongst music lovers. The series has featured musical heavyweights such as Babyface and Teddy Riley, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, and rappers Snoop Dogg and DMX. The Brandy and Monica face-off was a highly anticipated battle due to the years-long feud that’s plagued the women’s careers over the years, although their 1998 collaboration for the song, “The Boy is Mine” is the only Grammy award that either lady has.  Anyone who tuned into the series expecting to see a drama-filled drag-fest was highly disappointed as the ladies showed poise, elegance, respect and amazing vocals. Brandy kicked off the battle with her 2002 hit “What About Us?” followed by Monica’s “Everything to Me” single.  Get Meek out the comments! 😭😂😂 #Verzuz pic.twitter.com/FpbKJDzEoc — Randuhh (@Soul_is_ME) September 1, 2020 Both women paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman and his love of the arts.  “The level of devastation that we all have experienced in the past year is unprecedented. We could not have foreseen it. We pray that we can just bring a little bit of joy by acknowledging the music and the arts because he was a man that was dedicated to the arts,” Monica said. Brandy then read a poem in dedication to Kobe Bryant who was her date for the senior prom.  Over 1.2 million tuned in to watch the show, including Michelle Obama, Mariah Carey, Nas and Meek Mill, making it the most viewed Verzuz battle in the history of the series. The ladies closed out the show with a message from Democratic Vice President nominee Kamala Harris.  I am a huge fan of both Brandy and Monica and could not have been more honored to join tonight. Our voice is our vote—let’s use it in November: https://t.co/MykJL0X5gt. https://t.co/nWdUVC79BU — Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) September 1, 2020
