In response to the recent natural disasters in Haiti, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced today the Houston’s Paying It Forward Earthquake and Hurricane Relief Response to Haiti. The City of Houston is partnering with Houston Haitians United and the National Association of Christian Churches (NACC) Disaster Services to collect supplies for Haitians recovering from the major earthquake and storm that recently devastated Haiti. “After Hurricane Harvey and other major natural disasters devastated our city and displaced our families and friends, people from across the globe volunteered their time, financial donations, and supplies,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Houston is the proud home to a large Haitian community, and today, we are called to pay it forward to our neighbors in Haiti who are currently experiencing great suffering and loss.” Houston Texan Whitney Mercilus, who is of Haitian descent, supports the relief efforts. “Haiti is home and my heart is broken for all my Haitian people who have endured these tragedies. I am always in support of Mayor Sylvester Turner and the City of Houston for their continued support for Haiti. My family and I stand with Haiti to lend our support,” said entrepreneur and event consultant DJ Big Reeks on Mercilus’ behalf. Congressman Al Green and a representative for Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis also attended the announcement. The donation and supply drive will begin accepting donations on Monday, August 23, and will conclude on Saturday, August 28. The copyright infringement lawsuit against Grammy award- winning artist Gabriella Wilson (H.E.R), songwriter Justin Love and DJ Camper has been settled. In June 2020, Andre Sims, a well known songwriter and piano maestro, filed allegations against the trio after DJ Camper used Sims’ instrumental composition “Endless Minds” as part of the musical bed for the 2016 song, “Focus,” recorded by H.E.R. Specific details of the settlement have not been made public, but Sims originally filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit for copyright infringement, injunctive relief, accounting of all monies made, and for the defendants to create a constructive trust to hold royalties. “I’m happy we could reach a resolution, and would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers,” said Sims, who’s played with artists such as Stevie Wonder and Donnie McClurkin. “At this point, we have nothing more to say then we are pleased to see the case resolved and settled. Now, all parties can move on with their lives,” said James L. Walker, Sims’ attorney. “Focus” secured H.E.R. her first-ever No. 1 on a Billboard songs chart when it topped the Adult R&B Airplay tally the same year. “Focus” was nominated for the Ashford & Simpson’s songwriters award at the 2018 Soul Train Music Awards, and was nominated for best R&B song at the 2019 Grammy Awards.
