The Vibe is excited to bring our listeners closer to the music with our “Get to Know Your On-Air Hosts” series. Each month, we highlight one of our talented on-air hosts to give you a better sense of who they are beyond the airwaves. For this month, we are thrilled to shine the spotlight on KC Cooper, host Night Skool (Sunday 10pm-12am). Q: What inspired you to start your show? What motivates you to continue hosting each week? KC: “Marcus Sullivan influenced me. He believed in me. I emcee and host events from time to time and he thought I would make the perfect fit for a nighttime show. What motivates me each week is the opportunity to spread love. There are some people who have had a long week or a bad week and on Sunday, I get the chance to spread love and make them feel loved. My show is a chance to relieve some of the stress and pressure people feel throughout the week. Q: What is something your audience would be surprised to learn about you? KC: “I taught myself to read at four years old.” Q: Any closing thoughts/motivation for our readers and listeners? KC: “Be the change that you want to see. Love doesn’t cost a thing, but it’s worth a million dollars—it’s actually worth everything.” Thank you so much, KC, for taking the time to share your powerful story with our audience!

The Vibe is excited to bring our listeners closer to the music with our “Get to Know Your On-Air Hosts” series. Each month, we highlight one of our talented on-air hosts to give you a better sense of who they are beyond the airwaves. For this month, we are thrilled to shine the spotlight on DJ Supa Neil, host Caribbean Vibes (Sunday 8pm-10pm). Q: What inspired you to start your show? What motivates you to continue hosting each week? Supa Neil: “I’ve always loved Caribbean music and radio, so creating this show was my way to spread the vibrant culture and sounds of the islands. I also wanted to represent and connect with the over 200,000 Caribbean people in Houston.” Q: What is something your audience would be surprised to learn about you? Supa Neil: “Most people don’t know that I went to school for broadcasting or that I served as an infantry soldier in Operation Desert Storm. Also, I sometimes tear up at movies.” 🤷🏾‍♂️ Q: Any closing thoughts/motivation for our readers and listeners? Supa Neil: “Time doesn’t wait for anyone—tomorrow, next week, or even five years from now will come regardless. The best thing we can do is start today, take action now, and move toward our goals without delay.” Thank you so much, DJ Supa Neil, for taking the time to share your powerful story with our audience!

We are thrilled to introduce a new series highlighting our talented on-air personalities so that listeners can get to know them better and connect deeper with our programs. For September, we are shining the spotlight on the golden-hearted, Mz. Jessi- host of Brunch Vibez on Sundays 12pm-2pm. Q: What inspired you to start your show? What motivates you to continue hosting each week? Mz. Jessi: The inspiration behind the creation of my radio show comes from a deep passion for blending music, culture, and conversation that resonates with diverse communities. I’ve always loved the power of music—R&B, hip hop, and neo-soul, especially—and how it shapes our experiences and stories. Growing up, I was surrounded by R&B, hip hop, and neo-soul, and these genres always felt like the soundtrack to the most meaningful moments in life. I wanted to create a space where people could not only vibe to great music but also engage in discussions that reflect the richness of our diverse community.  My goal is to entertain, inform, and bring the community together through a fusion of music and meaningful dialogue. It’s all about connecting people to the culture in a way that’s relevant and fresh. What keeps me coming back to host each week is the pure vibe! I love that we’re building a community where we can talk about what’s happening in the world while vibing to a perfectly curated playlist. Each show feels like a big hangout session where everyone’s invited to chill, get informed, and just vibe out.  Honestly, seeing the reactions, the messages, and engaging with the listeners is what keeps me coming back week after week. It’s a privilege, and I’m driven by the desire to keep that connection alive and evolving. It’s like throwing a party with purpose, and I’m here for it! Q: What is something your audience would be surprised to learn about you?   Mz. Jessi:  I’m involved in multiple shows across both stations KTSU and The Vibe. In addition to hosting my own radio show, I am also one of the hosts of Tiger Thursdays and your producer for Impact Houston Live. I also create content for the social media pages of KTSU and The Vibe, while balancing the pursuit of my undergraduate degree in Radio, Television, and Film and preparing to pursue a master’s degree. Prior to seeking my degree in 2020, I was a Metro Bus Operator in Washington, DC for nearly a decade. I then became a CDL safety and training instructor at the University of Maryland, teaching students how to safely operate buses and obtain their CDL. That experience was fun and rewarding. However, like many others during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue my passion. I made the pivotal decision to complete my undergraduate degree. I started out as a part time student  at Bowie State University in Maryland. In the Spring of 2022, I transferred to Texas Southern University. And after only what seems like a few short years, I’m proud to say that I will be graduating in the December 2024. It’s been nothing but positive experiences since the moment I made that decision in 2020. The cherry on top is that my daughter and I are both graduating from separate HBCUs just a week apart, which is a significant accomplishment that I am most proud of. Q: Any other closing thoughts /motivation for our readers & listeners?  Mz. Jessi: As an on-air personality, I’m all about bringing a splash of excitement and authenticity to the airwaves each week. Every show is a blend of music, culture, and conversation that’s as vibrant and diverse as our listeners. The energy I get from the feedback and the connections made keeps the show flowing and always evolving. It’s all about creating an experience that resonates and excites. Whether you’re kicking back in your favorite spot, cruising with the windows down, or just finding your zen, I’m here to share the vibes to kick off your Sunday afternoon. My journey is a living testimony that what you think is impossible is definitely possible. Thanks for being a part of the journey—tune in, turn up the volume, and join me every Sunday from 12-2 CST. Peace, love, and great music—always! We appreciate you taking the time to let Vibe listeners get to know you a little better!

On Wednesday, September 4th, The Vibe celebrated its fourth anniversary with a vibrant party at The Savoy. The station’s on-air hosts, listeners, Underwriters, KTSU leadership, and neighboring HBCU radio colleagues came together to commemorate four years of being the soundtrack to Houston’s culture. To mark the special occasion, The Savoy honored The Vibe with a reserved section, custom Vibe cocktails, complimentary champagne, and delicious birthday cake for all attendees. The party was a celebration of the station’s growth and impact on the community. In March 2024, The Vibe welcomed radio trailblazer, Marcus Sullivan, who spearheaded the “All new Vibe” campaign and programming revamp. Under Sullivan’s visionary leadership, the station launched seven new programs, including the highly acclaimed “Side Chat Vibe Lounge” Talk Show hosted by TSU Student Regent, former Mr. TSU & Mr. HBCU, Taylor Getwood. “We’re incredibly grateful to our listeners, partners, and the larger KTSU team for the unwavering support over the past four years,” said Sullivan. “This celebration is a testament to the power of music and community.” Founded in 2020 as part of a national initiative by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, The Vibe has quickly become a beloved Urban Alternative radio station in Houston. Broadcasting on KTSU-2 HD, The Vibe App, and from 8pm-12midnight on KTSU 90.9FM, the station serves Hip-Hop and R&B listeners throughout the area and beyond. As The Vibe continues to evolve and grow, the station remains committed to providing its listeners with the best in Urban Alternative music and programming.

We are thrilled to introduce a new series highlighting our talented on-air personalities so that listeners can get to know them better and connect deeper with our programs. We kick off this monthly feature with the amazing Amir Diamond, host of The Afternoon Hustle weekdays at 2pm. Read on to get to know “The Hustler,” Amir! Q: What inspired you to start your show? What motivates you to continue hosting each week? Amir: “The Afternoon Hustle” was birthed in 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic. My mission has always been to entertain, encourage, inspire & inform. My ultimate goal was to give the community a show that would help them escape from our everyday problems (Monday-Friday from 2-7PM). When people tune in, I hope that they chuckle or smile at least once; and if they do…. then I’ve done my job. Our talented students who are studying broadcasting have motivated me to continue to put on great shows throughout the week. I am aware that God has placed me at The Vibe (powered by KTSU 90.9) for a reason and I don’t take it lightly. When I was in school, I wish I could pick the brain of professionals who have had success in the career field that I dreamt of being in. I love being that role model for our Tigers and look forward to seeing them shine. Q: What is something your audience would be surprised to learn about you?   Amir:  I’m an open book. I share a lot of my life on the airwaves. I’ve talked about my struggles as an openly gay black male and I’ve let folks in on what it was like when my mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I think my transparency has created a safe space for not only my listeners, but for the popular artists who stop by my show as well. Q: Any other closing thoughts /motivation for our readers & listeners?  Amir: I’d like to close this out the same way I close out my show every night: Remember to “Live this dream and to never let someone steal your shine!” We appreciate you taking the time to let Vibe listeners get to know you a little better!

It is safe to say that 2020 has been a year of awakenings, re-shifting and rebuilding, and no one knows this better than Steve Rogers, the owner of Houston hot spot Bar 5015, located in the historic Third Ward/ Museum District. Shortly after acquiring the bar, Rogers had to shut down due to coronavirus, and not long after re-opening, part of the bar was set afire up by arsonists (case still under investigation).  But he’s back! Rogers says Bar 5015 is once again open for business and is sharing his “recipe for success” with Vibe Houston readers. While many of us have heard his name, we wanted to dig a little deeper and find out exactly who is Steve Rogers and how did he become the successful business owner he is today? Rogers is single, a father of two daughters (ages 25 and 14) and grew up in north Houston.  He attended schools in the North Forest Independent School District, graduating from M.B. Smiley High School and from there, went to Texas Christian University (TCU) on a full athletic track scholarship. Through hard work, creativity and strategic thinking, this man from “humble beginnings” grew to be the well-respected heavy hitter in the Houston entertainment scene. Q: How did you get started? A: I’ve been an entrepreneur for the last 20 plus years. I got started working for Paul Mitchell hair care products in the early 90’s after I graduated from TCU. I was hired to help with the Black marketing and consulting, so I targeted all the Black salons and beauty shops in Houston and the surrounding areas. Paul Mitchell was a “traditionally white” hair care product, but I went and found all these top Black hairstylists like Tina Knowles-Lawson (mother of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles) who was then with Headliners, Rhonda Hicks of Hair Station, Kimberly Aitch, and others, and got them on board to be educators who could back me up by teaching classes with the products. So, if you had a Tina Knowles teaching these products, others who looked up to her would be more apt to buying. I also started throwing events and used well-known influencers like athletes and entertainers to drive people to the parties. One year with Paul Mitchell, we did a big hair show here and it was primarily all – white hairstylists teaching hair cutting and coloring classes. The next day we had to turn in the money to our manager. I had sold the most tickets; close to $40,000 worth of ticket sales. It then clicked in my head that if I could go out and get all of these top Black hairstylists from around the country and bring them down here to my own show, then I could keep all of this money. I asked for a leave of absence, and actually, it turned out to be my last day. I started my own company called Bottom Line Productions and started doing “Hair Battle” shows every MLK weekend, and it became a big deal for people all over the country.  It was a huge production and I knew I “made it” when, for my first show, I was down in the lobby checking someone in and I saw people from Bronner Bros. — who were major players in the Black hair game – also checking in. It was then that I knew we were on to something. Q: So how did you go from hair care to the club or night life industry? A: After 10 years in the hair business, I decided to venture into weekly events, which became more lucrative.  I started doing a place called Tonic on Tuesday nights, M Bar, Milkshake on Thursday nights, Scott Gertner’s Sky Bar on Friday nights and Belvedere on Sunday nights.  I then went on to get my own place, Sugar Hill, on Southmore.  From there I went on to Prospect Park and the Turkey Leg Hut, both of which I have part ownership. And now, Bar 5015, of which I am sole owner. Q: What is your philosophy on giving back? A: Growing up, I’ve always participated in projects with my mom during the holidays, going down to the Star of Hope on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and being a part of Kappa Alpha Phi fraternity, we were always finding ways to give back. I think it is important to always show your appreciation for your blessings by reaching out and giving back to the less fortunate. It’s about speaking to kids and uplifting them, being a mentor, allowing others to be your interns and showing the youth they can do other things besides sports and entertainment. You can teach them to be entrepreneurs and help the next generation carry on what we are putting out there right now. Q: What’s your recipe for success? Please provide a few tips for aspiring entrepreneurs. A: Don’t be afraid to lose. Look at it as a lesson. Don’t give up or let other people steer you away from your dreams. Surround yourself with good people And most importantly, if you have a plan – write it down. At Paul Mitchell, they would say “IF YOU THINK IT, INK IT!” MORE ABOUT BAR 5015 While enjoying the best beats vibing in the city, you can also enjoy brunch, burgers, wings, tacos, crawfish and more. The sleek dark-hued bar also offers cocktails and global small plates, plus weekly steak nights and a patio, perfect for social distancing and pandemic safety precautions.
