Written by Ariel Pirela on September 16, 2024

We are thrilled to introduce a new series highlighting our talented on-air personalities so that listeners can get to know them better and connect deeper with our programs. For September, we are shining the spotlight on the golden-hearted, Mz. Jessi- host of Brunch Vibez on Sundays 12pm-2pm.
Q: What inspired you to start your show? What motivates you to continue hosting each week?
Mz. Jessi: The inspiration behind the creation of my radio show comes from a deep passion for blending music, culture, and conversation that resonates with diverse communities. I’ve always loved the power of music—R&B, hip hop, and neo-soul, especially—and how it shapes our experiences and stories. Growing up, I was surrounded by R&B, hip hop, and neo-soul, and these genres always felt like the soundtrack to the most meaningful moments in life. I wanted to create a space where people could not only vibe to great music but also engage in discussions that reflect the richness of our diverse community. My goal is to entertain, inform, and bring the community together through a fusion of music and meaningful dialogue. It’s all about connecting people to the culture in a way that’s relevant and fresh.
What keeps me coming back to host each week is the pure vibe! I love that we’re building a community where we can talk about what’s happening in the world while vibing to a perfectly curated playlist. Each show feels like a big hangout session where everyone’s invited to chill, get informed, and just vibe out. Honestly, seeing the reactions, the messages, and engaging with the listeners is what keeps me coming back week after week. It’s a privilege, and I’m driven by the desire to keep that connection alive and evolving. It’s like throwing a party with purpose, and I’m here for it!
Q: What is something your audience would be surprised to learn about you?
Mz. Jessi: I’m involved in multiple shows across both stations KTSU and The Vibe. In addition to hosting my own radio show, I am also one of the hosts of Tiger Thursdays and your producer for Impact Houston Live. I also create content for the social media pages of KTSU and The Vibe, while balancing the pursuit of my undergraduate degree in Radio, Television, and Film and preparing to pursue a master’s degree.
Prior to seeking my degree in 2020, I was a Metro Bus Operator in Washington, DC for nearly a decade. I then became a CDL safety and training instructor at the University of Maryland, teaching students how to safely operate buses and obtain their CDL. That experience was fun and rewarding. However, like many others during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue my passion. I made the pivotal decision to complete my undergraduate degree.
I started out as a part time student at Bowie State University in Maryland. In the Spring of 2022, I transferred to Texas Southern University. And after only what seems like a few short years, I’m proud to say that I will be graduating in the December 2024. It’s been nothing but positive experiences since the moment I made that decision in 2020. The cherry on top is that my daughter and I are both graduating from separate HBCUs just a week apart, which is a significant accomplishment that I am most proud of.
Q: Any other closing thoughts /motivation for our readers & listeners?
Mz. Jessi: As an on-air personality, I’m all about bringing a splash of excitement and authenticity to the airwaves each week. Every show is a blend of music, culture, and conversation that’s as vibrant and diverse as our listeners. The energy I get from the feedback and the connections made keeps the show flowing and always evolving. It’s all about creating an experience that resonates and excites. Whether you’re kicking back in your favorite spot, cruising with the windows down, or just finding your zen, I’m here to share the vibes to kick off your Sunday afternoon. My journey is a living testimony that what you think is impossible is definitely possible.
Thanks for being a part of the journey—tune in, turn up the volume, and join me every Sunday from 12-2 CST.
Peace, love, and great music—always!

We appreciate you taking the time to let Vibe listeners get to know you a little better!
