Vibe With: Chericia Curtis brings Houston its “Soul Purpose”

Written by on January 3, 2022

Chericia Curtis is a woman wearing many impressive hats.  She is the creator, executive producer, writer, director and visionary behind “Soul Purpose,” a stage play coming to the Wortham Theatre at the end of January. The musical production which stars Houston’s own Kathy Taylor and new lead singer of the legendary Temptations singing group, Tony Grant, tells the stories of five powerful and strong women, taking you on a journey of IPP — Inspiration, Passion, and Purpose.  Curtis sat down with Vibe Houston, exciting us and readers about the play, saying for us to come out prepared to be motivated, encouraged, and uplifted.

Vibe Houston: Tell us about yourself? Where are you from, what do you do?

Curtis: I am a military brat, born in Augsburg, Germany.  As a young child, we traveled extensively across the country and in Europe.  I am married and live in the North Texas area with my amazing family and friends.  I’ve worked in the field of technology for over two decades, and am very active in my church and community.  I have also been writing, directing, and producing inspirational content for my church and community for almost a decade.  I am blessed to share spiritual content outside the four walls in very creative and inspiring ways.

Vibe Houston: How did you come up with the concept of “Soul Purpose.” What do you want audiences to walk away with?

Curtis: I collaborate on many projects with the very talented and tenured writer, TK Henderson, and through many hours of soul searching and brainstorming, I came up with Soul Purpose, a play on ‘sole purpose’.   SOLE is ‘only or single’ SOUL is the spiritual embodiment.   This very spiritual connection applies to every human being on the planet.  We want audiences to walk away realizing that no matter what you’ve been through or are going through, regardless of your age, race, past, present, or future, your soul has a purpose.   The original soundtrack written by Syleria Skinner will also stir and move the soul.

Vibe Houston: We see you have some major heavy hitters in this play.  Tell us about the cast.

Curtis: We have Houston’s own, world-renowned gospel artist, Kathy Taylor.  We also have The Temptation’s lead vocalist, Grammy-nominated artist and producer Tony Grant, from Tyler Perry Stage & Screen productions.  We have national gospel artist CeCe Godbolt, radio personality Dariea Tolbert Jacobs, comedienne Michael Prince, and many other talented and versatile actors and singers.

Vibe Houston: What led you to decide on Houston as one of the first tour stops for the play?

Curtis: We had a very successful performance in Houston in 2019 and felt that the city would be a great place to kick off the 2022 tour.

Vibe Houston:  How do we make a Houston …or Texas as a whole.. a major player for big budget productions?

Curtis: We have some of the most talented actors and singers in the country from North to South Texas!  We need to provide more financial incentives that will attract industry leaders to Texas.

Vibe Houston: How has it been working on this production during the pandemic?

Curtis: It has been a challenge but through the adversity, opportunities have presented themselves.   Fortunately, most of the cast remained the same and this has allowed the production to take off where we left off without too many changes.

Vibe Houston: The pandemic has severely impacted live theater productions across the nation. Do you think the theatre industry will fully bounce back?

Curtis: Yes, there’s nothing like live theater and even though the pandemic has impacted attendance over the past few years, I think it will come back stronger than ever.  I also think some of the best scripts and stage plays will come out of the pandemic. Creators often create best in solitude.

Vibe Houston: What’s next?

Curtis:  Several stage plays, Voices and Brothers Through the Fire and several screenplays that will be released latter 2022 and early 2023.   I’m also working on a big Christmas production, “Who Stole Jesus?”

Vibe Houston: It’s bold stepping out on Faith and being an entrepreneur or a creator. What do you tell anyone who has a dollar and a dream?

Curtis: There’s absolutely nothing wrong with financially supporting your dream and no one can fulfill your dream like you can.  Believe in your dream and never doubt its significance or impact.

Soul Purpose will be at the Wortham Theatre in Houston on Jan. 28 & 29, and at the Jefferson Center in Beaumont on Jan. 30.
