NBA legends Charles Barkley, Shaq receive backlash over Breonna Taylor comments

Written by on September 25, 2020

NBA legend Charles Barkley is no stranger to controversy, but his recent comments regarding the Breonna Taylor verdict has placed him in the hot seat.

During a recent taping of his weekly sports show, “NBA on TNT,” Barkley seemed to agree with the Taylor verdict.

“We do have to take into account that her boyfriend did shoot at the cops and shot a cop,” said Barkley. “So, like I said, even though I’m really sorry she lost her life, I don’t think that we can just say we can put this in the same situation with George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery. I just don’t believe that.”

Fans of the show were quick to respond on social media.

“Charles Barkley doesn’t understand what “defund the police means” and not one person in the building explained it to him.” – @SoCalJCred tweeted.

“i know Charles Barkley did NOT just say on national television — “i’m sad Breonna Taylor lost her life, but we can’t forget her boyfriend did fire at a cop first.” please tell me i heard that wrong incorrectly …” @AshNicoleMoss tweeted.

Barkley also addressed the defund the police movement, calling it crap.

“We need to stop that defund or abolish the cops crap,” said Barkley. “I hear these fools on TV talking about defund the police and things like that — we need police reform and prison reform and things like that, because you know who ain’t going to defund the cops? White neighborhoods and rich neighborhoods.”

TNT co-host and former NBA All- Star Shaquille O’Neil defended Barkley and agreed with his take on the Taylor case.

“I have to agree with Charles, this one is sort of lumped in,” he said. “You have to get a warrant signed and some states do allow no-knock warrants. And everyone was asking for murder charges,” O’Neil said. “When you talk about murder, you have to show intent. A homicide occurred and we’re sorry a homicide occurred. When you have a warrant signed by the judge, you are doing your job, and I would imagine that you would fire back.”

Barkley and Shaq have yet to release any statements in response to the backlash.
